Debrief Upcycling Unit

As our culminating activity, we created new goods by upcycling items we would ordinarily throw away.

1) How does this connect to our earlier discussions about products and where they come from?

2) Is upcycling a better solution than recycling or are they both equally important? Explain.

3) What did you learn from this activity? Give specific examples.

  1. 1. This connects to the earlier discussions because we are taking old recycled objects and turning them into new products. This also helps us know where the products come from like our house and yard or our garage. This is good because it uses old worn objects into new and recycled object that people will like and use.
    2. Well their both important but upcycling is more important because it takes something used and about to be thrown out and reuse it and turn it into something new and usable. This also helps because somebody does not have to buy a new one that is expensive and it uses something that was going to go to waste and be thrown out.
    3. I learned that you can make great thing out of ordinary materials like jars and rope. I made an oil lamp jar from a jar, and a wick with copper to hold it in place. This was easy and I mad something that would be thrown out into something new and cool that someone can use every Know and then.

  2. From upcycling I learned many things. The products I used for my upcycling project were just things I had at home. There was nothing fancy or expensive involved. I believe that recycling and upcycling are equally important. We recycle aluminum to make more aluminum products. We can upcycle a simple jar and use it for something else. The difference between upcycling and recycling is that with upcycling you can decide for yourself what the product will be used for. From upcycling I learned that not everything is trash. You don't have to throw it away just because you're done with it. You can use it for something else.

  3. 1. This connects to our earlier discussions about products and where they come from because you are using everyday products and you are turning it into something new and reusable. We talked about how people just throw items in the trash instead of recycling it or upcycling it. The people who do that are hurting the environment. I think that everyone should try to recycling and if material can be made into something else, then upcycle them.
    2. I believe that upcycling and recycling are equally important. They both help save the environment. Recycling is when you put waste into a box and it gets picked up by the state and taken to a factory where it is made into new things. Upcycling is where you take materials or items that you are going to throw away and you make it into something new. The creation of new things is the end product of both upcycling and recycling.
    3. I learned a few things from this project. I learned that recycling and upcycling is import for everyone to do so we can save the environment. I also learned that recycling and upcycling are not boring things. You can have fun when you do them both. Upcycling can be fun because you make new things and recycling is fun because you could play basketball with the recyclables.

  4. 1) Upcycling items connects to our earlier discussions about products and where they come from by recycling products that we would normally throw away and reusing them to make other things that we would use. When our recyclables go to the recycle plant, they break them down and sort them out. Then they send the materials to another company that reuses those materials so that they can make new stuff. We did that ourselves by taking recycled objects and making them or using them into something that we thought everybody would want to use throughout their house or other living quarters. Some recycled objects by using the whole thing or they just used part of it.
    2) Upcycling and recycling are both equally important because you are recycling either way. If you upcycle, then you are reusing something for another thing. If you recycle, then the plants where the recycled materials go they separate them and break them down. Then they take those materials that they break down and send them to companies that upcycle those materials. Either way, you are upcycling in a way. You upcycle by reusing things that you would otherwise throw away and use them for something else in your home and other companies reuse other materials that they need to make other things.
    3) From this activity I learned that you can make cool and useable stuff out of something that you would normally throw away. You could use something every day in your home or just use it for decoration. Something that you could use every day would be a scarf for style when you are out and about. Something that you could just use for decoration is like the magazine paper flower wreath that you could hang up in your home. You can make anything attractive out of something that you would otherwise just throw away because you don’t think it is worth anything anymore.

  5. This connects to upcycling because in our earlier discussion, we talked about how our products got in our hands now and where they were made. When we are upcycling these items, we get to see where our new product comes from and how they are made. I feel that recycling and upcycling both have the benefits that are similar to each other. In upcycling, you use most, if not all, of the parts of the product you once had to make it into something else. In recycling, the parts will also get reused, but machines usually make the product from reusable items and you have big companies controlling the companies. I learned from this activity that there are different ways to reuse and recycle our items other than placing them outside in the recycling bin. We can make an old product that is not use worthy anymore, into a product that we can use every day. When we recycle or upcycle, we help the environment because the parts of the old product are not going to be dumped in a landfill, instead reused into a product that can be sold in multiple stores. For example, water bottles that you buy at a store can be recycled and upcycled. Once you have used them and have no more use for the water bottle, you can recycle it and then it can be made into a pen cover or any other thing. Materials, such as water bottles and old cereal boxes can be reused and recycled. You just have to put forth the effort to make it happen.

  6. 1. In our earlier discussions, we learned about how some of the products that we buy negatively impact the environment and the people who make them. There are many factors that go into making even seemingly simple products. Consumers should consider the ingredients, how the product is made, the working conditions of the people who make the product, and the impact that product has on the environment. Sometimes considering these factors reveals that the manufacturing of a product has negative impacts. This is very connected to upcycling because upcycling reduces the amount of new products that have to be made. Any negative impact that a product has is reduced if less of the product needs to be manufactured.
    2. Upcycling and recycling are both equally important. With recycling, people send recyclables off for a recycling center to recycle them. The recycled products are usually made back into something that can be used to make a new product. For example, recycling centers recycle plastic water bottles back into plastic, and that plastic can be made into any plastic product. With upcycling, things that can be reused are made into an entirely new product. For example, old shirts can be upcycled into necklaces. Although there are some companies that upcycle, upcycling can also be done by individuals. Upcycling and recycling both take old things and reuse them instead of throwing that away. They both accomplish the same goal of keeping non-biodegradable things out of the landfills and lessening the need for new products to be made. They both help the environment in the same way, so they are both equally important
    3. I learned several things from this activity. I learned that there are many more recycling centers in Wilmington than I thought there were. Several trash companies (including the one my family uses) pick up recycling bins. New Hanover County also has at least 4 recycling sites. I also learned more about upcycling. I already knew that you can reuse things, but doing the upcycling project has given me lots of ideas about things that I can upcycle. Upcycling is a lot easier than I thought it was. Many upcycling projects are very simple, and they don’t require lots of tool and supplies. Upcycling is something easy, fun, and inexpensive that people can do at home

  7. 1. In our earlier discussions we talked about how apple products are made and what kind of conditions that they are made in and what Country they are made from. Then we talked about the gold rush in the Amazon. I can see that apple and Upcycling is almost the same because we are both making new products out of material and the gold rush is like Upcycling all so because people are reusing the gold to melt it down to make it into new shapes.
    2. I think that they are an equally important because it is still better than just trash companies coming and picking up our trash and taking it to the dump to decompose. In a way they are basically the same idea because when you recycle then you would melt it down or crush it down and reuse it and Upcycling is almost the same idea, but instead you just remake other items out of the old items. For example is you can use a T-shirt and make a scarf out of the shirt. There are just so many different ways you can reuse items that you thought that was trash a week ago. Recycling is just a little different because the item that you recycled would be completely remade or made into another type of item.
    3. I learned that you can almost reuse anything or make something out of something that you couldn’t use any more. Even if people don’t want to be creative or have some fun with their children. All it takes is a little time and if you don’t have any ideas then look on the internet. There is tons of information on there that could help you to help the Earth. Maybe that you don’t want to Upcycle anything then go a least try to recycle something that you cannot us old soda bottles anything.

  8. 1. The way that this connects to what we did before was that instead of making upcycled materials we were talking about upcycled and recycled materials. The making of upcycled materials shows that you can use some ever day house hold items to make upcycled materials and it can be very simple to make.
    2. I would have to say that upcycling would be better because you don’t need to use big machines to turn house hold items into upcycled materials. Upcycled materials can also be more exciting to make instead of recycling materials.
    3. I learned that there are a ton of house hold items that you can make into upcycled materials for example making a non-used t-shirt into a scarf made out of shirts. I also learned that there are a lot of people out in the world that upcycle every day.

  9. This activity connects to earlier discussions because we were talking about reusing old material to create new things like you do when you recycle. Recycling and upcycling are both equally important because they save space in the landfills, and the products from recycling and upcycling can be made into something else. I learned that you can create many different things from upcycling. One of the things that I learned how to make from upcycling is a bracelet. The bracelet was made out of old t-shirts, and it didn’t take long to make. I also learned that there are many types of material that can be reused or be made into something else. Upcycling is an easy process and it doesn’t cost you a lot of money.

  10. 1. This project connected with our earlier discussions on how the iPod was made and what went into making the iPod (materials, labor, and manufacturing.) This was our first look into how most of our everyday items were made. After discussing what workers go through to get iPods made we looked at companies who recycled trash and how they recycled the material. We also learned the benefits of recycling and what are recyclables were used to produce. We watched videos on how companies recycled and learned were and how aluminum was made.
    2. I think upcycling is a great way to reduce waste and so is recycling. But, there almost equal to each other but I feel that recycling is better. Upcycling is when you would take items that are meant to be thrown away and use them to construct something new, but recycling is a better way to get rid of waste because it’s like giving back to the environment. The items that you may have upcycled are going to end up in the trash regardless but when you recycle a plastic bottle it will be used over and over again, not thrown away. And when you’re able to reuse something over again not just once but repeatedly it eliminates waste from the landfill more than just reusing something once to make into a whole new item. That will potentially break forcing you to have to toss it in the trash.
    3. I learned many things about upcycling that I had never known. First off, I never knew there was such thing as upcycling; I didn’t know the meaning of the word “upcycling” at first. Now I know it means to reuse an item that is meant to be thrown away. But, I learned from completing my DIY project that a simple wrapper that is thrown in the trash, can be made into a stylish bracelet. Also, that upcycling is a better choice to choose from; when it comes to throwing away items that you aren’t going to recycle.

  11. 1) This connect us to our earlier discussions because all of there earlier mentions items were made out of raw products. Such as the IPod, all of the materials in the IPod are either synthetic or dug up out of the earth and melted. Another important point is the fact that upcycle materials are made by you, well not the original product but the new one. This would mean that they would not have to come from places like China to supply you with a good.
    2) Upcycling and recycling are both very important because they lessen the impact on the environment. Products that are recycled may give off pollution when they are melted down but that would mean they take less space. Upcycling just modify an object to make it serve a different purpose. Another positive point on up cycling is the fun factor. I am sure it is a lot more fun to transform an object then it is to send it off in a crate or dump it in a recycling bin.
    3) I learned in this activity what Upcycling was. I actually never heard of Upcycling before you told us about it. I mean Pinterest has been in my life via my step mom for about a year but I never actually knew that was what it was called. Another thing I learned was how vast the amount of items that can be upcycled, from CD’s into coasters and from beads into bowls it is all really cool.

  12. The Upcycling project makes a connection to our earlier discussions about recycling because we reused old material to make new ones. Just like the recycling we learned in the movies that had discussed recycling and its importance. The companies in the movie took old objects that everyone didn’t really pay much attention to after they had thrown them away and then turned them into a brand new object just like we did. The workers also took a series of trail and errors in order to make the new product more useful and to help improve the environment. Upcycling items also connect to our earlier discussions about products and where they come from because when our recyclables go to the recycle plants, they break them down and sort them out. Then they send the materials to another organization that then reuses the materials so that they can make new products. This connects because we did that by ourselves. We did this by taking recycled objects and making them or using them into something that we thought everybody would want to use throughout their house or other living environment. We also learned about how some of the products that we buy negatively impact the environment and the people who make them. Consumers should consider the ingredients; how the product is made, the working conditions of the people who make the product, and the impact that product has on the environment. People most often forget that recycled products takes a lot of hard work and dedication. It also comes with major health risks and numerous risks to the environment and the natural resources. Upcycling and recycling are both equally important because you are recycling either way. They are also equally important because they both help improve the environment. If you Upcyclye, then you are reusing something for another thing. For example, old shirts can be upcycled into pillows. Although there are some companies that Upcyclye, Upcycling can also be done by individuals. Upcycling and recycling both take old things and reuse them instead of throwing that away. They both achieve the same finished goal of keeping non-biodegradable things out of the landfills and lessening the need for new products to be made. I learned from the project that you can almost reuse anything and make new products out of old things. I also learned that there is a ton of information on how to help the Earth and its natural resources. Ways of Upcycling is to take an old T-shirt and make it into a new product. One main product that we made and I actually enjoyed was that we turned the T-shirt into a brand new scarf. The way you turn it into a new scarf is by cutting the shirt from pit to pit. Then you would cut thin strips and stop 1 inch from the ending point. Then you have to tie the loose parts of the base of the scarf and stretched it out and make it long enough to wear.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This project connects to our earlier discussions because we are recycling products that will be used and can be used over and over again. Like the T-shirt scarfs, no one wore them so we made them something some of us would use. I think they are both equally important. Mostly because recycling and upcycling are reusing products that can or can’t be broken down. I learned that making things some used products is fun to do. I also learned that most of the products we use every day are reusable.

  14. 1.) I think it related to how items are manufactured and produced because a lot of materials are thrown away and discarded unnecessarily. We can make use of pretty much any kind of materials, you can upcycle items that cannot be recycled and recycle items that cannot be upcycled. If we would recycle the raw materials from the earth instead of mining for more, we would be efficient with our resources and definitely reduce our environmental impact.
2.) Recycling and upcycling both reduce the waste produced and left. However, there is a difference between recycling and upcycling. Recycling is where you take items that were previously used and melt them, bind them, and make a new product out of them, and upcycling takes materials in their current state, shape, and form and increase the value of it. Upcycling definitely adds character to a certain product though, and makes it individual and original. I think they are equally as important because some things cannot be upcycled and should be recycled. Items like old computers cannot be upcycled to create a functioning piece of technology, and recycling would be of use with this particular product.
3.) I learned that there are tons of ways to reduce the materials we discard. Even the materials that seem to be the most obsolete can be taken and made into something special and enjoyable for anyone. Even starburst rappers and old magazines can be made into something beautiful. I watched people weave and mold items into wonderful accessories, granted it is more time consuming but it definitely reduces what makes it to the landfill.

  15. 1. The items/products that come from other places can be turned into other products to make something else. This connects to what the class discussed about where they come from because it shows that the things we throw away can be used for other products that we normally go out and buy. It’s actually a good thing because we can use the things we throw away into a new handmade product.
    2. I think that upcycling and recycling are both a good thing because when recycling takes place we are reusing what we throw away, and when upcycling occurs we take things that we usually throw away and turn them into something useful. Upcycling is really fun I wouldn’t mind doing this every once in a while.
    3. In this activity I learned a lot, like all the different resources that we consume from other countries can be reused into other things that we throw away. It was very fun activity to do , and a very nice learning activity.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think that there both equally important because your both saving it it’s just that one way you go to a recycle place and put it there were that goes to a plant and get made in the brand new things. The upcycleing is you’re taking up material and making them in to stuff that you use instead of througing the material away. What I learned from this activity is that you can make so much out of so little and it can come out so cool looking and good. Like you can make snow globes and bracelets and picture frames and so much more and it really fun to do and looks cool.

  17. In our earlier discussions, we talked about where products came from and how they were produced. We also learned what affect this had on the environment. As our discussions moved more toward recycling and upcycling, we started to learn how waste from old products could be reused to make new products. We learned that by doing these things we could help the environment. While completing the upcycling activity, we were able to discover how new useful things could be created from things that we would normally throw away.
Upcycling and recycling are both better alternatives than simply throwing something away. However, I do believe that upcycling is the better solution. Recycling reuses old material, but it doesn’t use that material in its current form. It has to be broken down and processed before it can be made into a new product. Upcylcling takes old material as well as traditionally unrecyclable material and turns it into things that people can use. It doesn’t require any processing from machinery that could potentially have a negative affect on the environment.
During this activity, I have learned many things about different products and the impact that their production has on the environment. I learned that by recycling and upcycling, new products could be created while reducing land waste. By sending your recyclables to recycling plants instead of landfills, you are helping the environment greatly because your trash is being used to create new products rather than just sitting around in a landfill. When you upcycle, the trash you use doesn’t even need to be sent anywhere. For example, you can use a shirt to create a new scarf or make a snow globe using a jar and some glitter.

1.) When we talked about the products that we use every day and where they come from, we found out that the majority of the items that are used in our products, are all-natural. Almost none of the products that we reviewed contained anything that did not originate from the earth’s surface. And now that we are talking about upcycling, we see that we re-use items that would otherwise be thrown away, and make them into something creative. When we discussed both topics, we saw that whether we upcycle products or recycle products, the earth is benefited.
2.) I think that recycling and upcycling are equally important. I think that they are equally important because they both reuse items that have already been used. When you recycle something, you clean (or in some cases, strip) that item down to be reused again. When that item is recycled, it is either used again as itself, or it is put into another item to make it better. When an item is upcycled, that certain item is used in a creative way to make something creative. I think that upcycling and recycling are both of equal importance because they both create something new, something that we can use. Whether we use it out of need or out of pleasure.
3.) From this activity, I learned that upcycling is fun and shows everyone’s side of creativity. I learned that when you upcycle, you have to pay attention to detail – which I am very good at. I also learned that I have upcycled before. I have upcycled items like Capri-Sun juice boxes, shirts, and jewelry. I learned that upcycling can be fun, but if you let your imagination get carried away, it can be expensive. I learned that when you upcycle something, you have to think outside the box, but then again you have to think inside the box. By thinking outside the box you have to be very creative and consider every option that is opened to you when you are upcycling. But when you think inside the box, you have to consider your budget, and stay within it. You have to consider your resources, and not freely use them. You have to make your resources last – make the most of them.

  19. Earlier we had to pick a product and learn almost everything about it from what, where, and how it’s made. A big focus was the materials that were used to make the product. Pretty much every student picked a product that was mass produced and still is. Thinking about how many of these products there are out there and everything that goes into them we can see how wasteful a lot of the companies were. This then tied into recycling and upcycling show how the end of a product doesn’t necessarily nowadays have to be the end. Today we can reuse and remake products out of almost anything. There is no reason that we shouldn’t be greener when we can be.
I believe that both are on equal terms and good options and should be used often and always for the betterment of our planet. They work together hand in hand and both are efficient methods. I think that any method that reuses products and keeps us from having to exploit more of our natural resources is a good intuitive and should be taken along with the others already established methods.
Overall I have to say this entire recycling/upcycling unit was very interesting and fun. Upcycling like recycling is a good thing and protects our environment and helps us keep our earth clean and green. Previously before this unit I had never even heard of upcycling. This project for me and I believe many others made them actually think about our environment and that is a great thing.

    1. It connects because of the fact that we talked about Upcycling while learning about what is put into the things we use. Also, we watched some videos on Upcycling and recycling. More so of the recycling. Also, we watched videos on making t-shirts into scarves. This was to teach us the importance and creativity of Upcycling. Lastly, because of learning it was connected in a way that you could understand the importance of the theme as a whole.
    2. Upcycling and recycling are equally as good, but if I had to choose one I would say Upcycling. Because you’re adding value to something. Also, because it’s better that you save things especially if they are taking up space you can upcycle it and give it to someone as a gift. That way you increased the value and someone can enjoy it as well. Another reason is because you can get all your need out of an Item that you bought or was given to you. Instead of just throwing it away or recycling it.
    3. I learned that Upcycling and recycling can be fun. How not to waste and be more eco-friendly. Also, I learned that going green isn’t so geeky and it’s kind of fun. But most importantly its better me and future generations. The t-shirt scarves were fun which is why I would actually love to go green and recycle more and upcycle. I wouldn’t mind doing some DIY’s and learning more in-depth about going green.

  21. This may connect to our discussion that we had earlier about products and where they come from because some of the products that were presented may have been recycled and or upcycled. Mostly all of the products that we as “normal” people would throw away are taken up and recycled to produce new items and products such as cell phones, bathroom necessities and other wants. There is a process to recycling our waste that we throw away. They are sent from a waste treatment plant and are separated and sent to different plants that melt down the object and reform a new one. Upcycling is very similar to recycling because again we are using products that we would usually throw away and making something new out of it with thought going through the process of melting it. We use the throw away exactly as they are. Upcycling and recycling are both equally important. Recycling is the re-usage of items by going through a process of separation and being melted down to form a newer product. Upcycling comparable to recycling does not involve going through a process but does include re-usage of throw away items to make or produce a newer item with the exception of all its conditions. I learned a variety of things from this activity. One thing I learned is that recycling is a better thing to do. I learned how items can go through a process of being melted down and forming a new product. The majority of everything we use today were mostly recycled and made into something new. I have learned how the make a beaded wrap bracelet which does take time but has a great end result anyone would love them. Using old scraps from home like buttons and beads is the most interesting thing ever. I will now know to always recycle and that I should not throw away everything I lost interest in because I can upcycle and may save a lot of money.

  22. It's the making of the product that relates to our earlier discussions. We all got a closer look at how certain things were made, as in the materials needed, the labor, and where they were made. This project has actually helped us experience how to "manufacture products". In a way, we were the "company" and the materials we used turned out to be our product. (That's what I personally thought). I think up cycling and recycling are equally important because they both do the environment a good. I see up cycling as the more "advanced and creative" type of recycling because you have to put time into it to make something; though a lot of people don't even realize how easy up cycling can be. But it's definitely understandable if you don't have the time; the point is, people should get involved in more recycling activities. It is so important that we learn how to be more conservative. Sometimes we don't even know what was put into our goods. We don't take the time to think about what natural resources had to be involved in the process. Personally, I have learned that pretty much anything can be either recycled or up cycled. Who would of ever thought that an old t-shirt could be made into a pretty scarf; Or an old picture frame into a jewelry holder. This unit has made me realize that there is no excuse to not recycle/upcycle.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. The upcycling project connects to products and where they come from, because we are using products that were manufactured and these products are old, do not function correctly anymore and have been consumed i.e. empty plastic bottles for our upcycling creations. Instead of throwing away these products that have been used we can use them to create a whole new product by upcycling for a different purpose or reuse that same product for the same purpose. This will create less waste and manufactures will not have to meet such a high demand for a product. For example if people reuse plastic water bottles rather than throwing away the bottles it will create less waste, and if the more people that do this will lower the demand for plastic water bottles. Another positive aspect is manufactures of products that have byproducts that pollute the environment can reduce their environmental impact since demand is lower. An example is if people reuse plastic water and create less demand for them the manufacture will produce less and reduce the pollutants within the air created when creating plastic water bottles.
    2. Upcycling and recycling are both equal important. For instance if people decided to only upcycle the world would run out of resources because the world would have huge amounts of new products created through upcycling that may not be as effect as the original product that for filled the same purpose. For example if we upcycle t-shirts into a scarf; the t-shirt scarf will not keep the person as warm as a scarf meant to keep you warm, because that scarfs purpose was to keep you warm and that’s is why it was made out of thick material unlike the t-shirt scarf. Recycling is good for the environment but it does not use all of the waste. In recycling there are parts of the waste that is left over. For example a piece of lined paper can be recycled but the ink that formed the line of the paper is wasted. Therefore if people only recycled we would run out of the resources that can’t be recycled.
    3. What I have learned from this activity is that lots of people actually care about saving our environment. Originally I thought recycling and upcycling consist of a small amount of people, but in reality there are millions of people that strive to upcycle, recycle and protect our environment. I also learned about what upcycling is and what organizations that does this for a business, such as Terracycle and Preserve. I learned that recycling plants are not small but are large and effective in reducing waste. When doing this activity I about learned initiatives that help in reducing waste, such as Keep America Beautiful and Keep New Hanover County Beautiful. Finally I learned upcycling and recycling are to things we can do to extend the life our earth’s environment, so future generations can see the natural beauty of the world.

  24. 1. In earlier discussions, we have talked about items, where they come from, how they are made, and what kind of effects they have on our environment. We also talked about all the different steps that go into making the products we use every day. When we talked about the production of the iPod, we learned that almost each piece of it was made in different parts of the world and then manufactured in one single place. Then, we learned about how much the world wastes without even thinking. Recycling and Upcycling are an environmentally safe answer to reduce the world’s waste. We learned about the difference between recycling and upcycling. Recycling is used materials processed to become used again. Upcycling is used materials that are created into something else that can be used; not the same thing as before.
    2. I think that recycling and upcycling are equally important because they both take items that would otherwise be thrown away and use them again. Instead of trashing these materials, they are made again into the same or something different. So many things are able to be used again, but many do not take the time to recycle them, therefore they sit in a land fill when they could be in a building being prepared to be used as something new or different. Upcycling is just as important too. When you have materials that you have lying around that you will most likely never use again, they can be made into something completely different and environmentally friendly. Upcycling in my opinion opens up creativity, inventions, and helpful tools. There are so many benefits to each of these activities whether it be taking some newspaper to your local recycling plant, or using your old forks to make a beautiful wind chime; all we have to do is take action and help.
    3. This activity really taught me that the little things do help; that I need to start focusing on the environment’s future, and there needs to be changes. I can make a difference from the easiest tasks. For example, instead of throwing that piece of trash paper away, I can recycle it. When there is that used piece of aluminum foil that I am going to throw away, I can just as easily walk to put it in the recycling bin. I also learned that recycling doesn’t have to be boring, it can be fun and interactive. There are so many groups that have recycling activities, events, and fundraisers that I can go help with and be a part of. I learned I can also use my creative side to create new things that otherwise, no one would think of like a jump rope made out of little yogurt bottles. I can make a difference one step at a time, and all together we can make the world beautiful.

  25. 1) This activity connects to our earlier discussions because we talked about recycling and how many different items we use all the time and don't realize where they come from or how they are made. For instance, when we talked about the toothbrushes made out of recycled yogurt cups and how they are better for the environment.
    2) In my opinion i feel as though they are both equally important. Because not only can recycling be good and help raise money, but it is also better for our environment just as much as upcycling is. Upcycling is great because of the simple fact that you can use old items you have and make something for a gift or even a toy for a child or a hair accessory and so on and son on. When you upcycle it is efficient and can also save a lot of money.
    3) I learned that it's really amazing where some of our everyday products are made at how they are made at and how they are made. It's like a science almost. For example how we made our scarves and then we went onward and made different things like pot rots, boxes, bracelets, bags, an hour glass, etc. This activity made a lot of people double think about how they don't have to spend money on some clothes or scarves or hair accessories when you can just make them in no time at home.

  26. 1.) This Upcycling unit has to do with other discussions we have had in the past because it tells us where our garbage and recyclables go once we get rid of them. Us as a whole should be trying to cut back on throwing things away and really start to recycle more. Our environment is negatively impacted by humans every day. We need to learn to change some things, and soon. It’s amazing how just as little as recycling, can make such a huge difference in our society and in our environment.
2.) I feel that Recycling and Upcycling have the equal importance. It is just as helpful to make new products from processed recycled material as it is to make more improved things out of non-processed recycled material. They both have their benefits and both help with cutting back on the amount of garbage being thrown out every day. If more people recycled or upcycled daily, the amount of garbage and waste in our landfills would be cut back an extreme amount.
3.) From this activity, I learned that there are many things you can use for Upcycling. For example, you can make old t-shirts into bags and scarves with just a few steps. You can make tons of things with just a few materials, and you don’t even need to buy anything new, it’s all used stuff you have just laying around. I also learned the process of recycling. I learned how they sort the different types of recycled material, like the cans, glass, newspaper, cardboard, and plastics. Each category has its own bins and is processed in different ways throughout the cycle.

  27. 1.Our earlier discussions have focused on all aspects of recycling. But we have been focusing on all of the effects that recycling has on materials that we use and recycle in our everyday lives. We have talked about how things that we use every day are made, how they are produced, and what goes into the production of some of our favorite items. We have also discussed how our everyday items can be recycled; we have talked about what recycling is and what takes place in the recycling process. Last but not least, our recent discussions have been focused on upcycling. We have talked about the pros and cons of upcycling and recycling. We have also established the differences and similarities in upcycling and recycling.
2.I think that recycling and upcycling are both equally important because both give you the opportunity to make a used product into something new and reusable. They are both an alternative to throwing something away and that being taken to a landfill, which is probably the worst thing to do for our environment. They are very important in this day and age because if we don’t do something about our environment and how we destroy it, we are going to be paying for that sooner rather than later. Both should be taken at their full advantage since we have the opportunity to use them.
3.I have learned many things from this activity. Knowing that I can make little changes that will go to a bigger cause, I will try my best to associate those little changes in my daily life. I can also try and take my imagination to a whole other level with thinking about how I can take used products and make them into new and reusable things. I will also think twice when I throw something in the trash, to see whether or not I could make something new with it, or recycle it. I hope that these little changes can help the environment one recycled/upcycled item at a time!

  28. This upcycling project connects to our earlier discussions about products and where they come from, because we are reusing products that could have been thrown away like everyone else does. But we did the right thing and thought about the consequences of that product being manufactured again, and made fun activities on how we could make something else out of that product. By doing this there will be less waste that will be affecting the environment. In our discussions we thought of how many of these products there are out there and everything that goes into them we can see how wasteful a lot of the companies were.
Upcycling and recycling are they both equally important to do they both help out to have a cleaner and better environment. When we recycle we give reusable products that can be reuse to any recycling company. But when we are upcycling with upcycling, things that can be reused are made into an entirely new product. They both are that help out with lessening of waste in landfills and the need for new products to be made.
I learn many things through this activity. I learned that you can have fun and help out your future generations. There are so many simple but creative ways on which you can upcycle, by doing the project I learn that you can reuse anything into something new and put that to a good use. I also learned that there are many places here in Wilmington you can go give the products that are recyclable.

  29. 1. This activity connects to earlier discussions because when creating these up cycling products we experienced using all different mixes of product from all over. In our discussions we discussed how products we use are made from all over the world. In this activity we experienced up cycling products from all over the world and we found how to make the products. In earlier discussions we talked about how to use materials that we don’t really use much now or use what we would normally throw away to up cycle materials to create something people could either wear or reuse instead of just throwing the materials away and in this activity we took materials that we would normally throw away and used them to make new creations.
    2. Upcycling and recycling are both equally important solutions. Upcycling is important because instead of throwing materials away and creating more waste, you up cycle materials into something new that can be used or worn. Recycling is important because you can take plastics, glass, and cardboard that you would normally throw away into waste, and recycle them so that they can be reused after processed. Upcycling and recycling are both ways that help the environment we live in because they both stop materials that would go to landfills to pollute our Earth.
    3. I learned how to create scarfs, boxes, bracelets, globes, cup coasters, and much more out of materials that I would normally just leave sitting around or just throw away. I learned how easy upcycling can be, I always thought upcycling would be a difficult task but this activity has showed me how easy it really is. I actually learned what upcycling was, I never really knew how to upcycle something or what it meant but now I do. I learned that upcycling can be a fun task. Most importantly, I have realized that it helps the environment.

  30. 1.) This connects to our earlier discussions about products and where they came from because we are taking objects that were once products and making them into something new. The products may have been thrown away because they may have not been recyclable. It is still important to be careful of what you buy but upcycling what you buy is better for the environment. When you upcycle you know where your final product was made. You know that nobody was harmed while making it.
2.) In my opinion upcycling and recycling are both equally important. This is because
they both help the environment. When you recycle the materials are cleaned and processed and used to make new products. When you upcycle you use old products that are no longer useful to make something new. By doing this you are reducing waste. It is a much better solution because whenever you throw something in a land fill the trash just keeps piling up and nothing new is made from it.
3.) By doing this activity I learned you can make some really cool things. It was interesting to see that you can make useful things for practically free. We made a wreath out of just magazines, t-shirts and hangers. I learned that you can help the environment by doing this even if your parents will not recycle instead of using the landfill. I also learned that you can even sell the things you made for a profit to help a good cause.

  31. The ways that making our own items connect with other products and where they come from is that we buys objects without realizing how much hard work goes behind it, where the factories get their items that are needed to make and whether or not the workers are mistreated. The hard work behind one simple thing might be a lot more work than it seems, whether one realizes it or not it makes an impact when we buy that product. The product might be the best but one does not know whether the workers are mistreated or not. For one to know if the workers are treated unfairly one would have to research and maybe even visit the companies.
Both recycling and upcycling are important, but to me it seems that upcycling seems like a better way to go if we want to help the environment. Though recycling is good for the environment, well better than throwing something away, upcycling seems like a better idea to me because the product is taken at its current form to make a new product that could possibly be used every day. Recycling is when you take a product and make it into a new form by breaking down the molecules to form that new product. With upcycling one could make many new items without having to cause harm to the environment and one can make it at home too.
From this activity I learned that Even though it might be easy to throw away that soda can, water bottle or clothes it could be used to make new things that you could end up buying at the store which would probably cost a lot more but it could also help the environment. With you making that product you know exactly how it was made without having to think about who made it and whether or not the person was given their equal rights. Also I have learned that not many realize where their products come from. Even if it might be a popular item that everyone buys for example; the IPod touch, can cause an impact when you buy it. It not only affects the buyer but also those who go through the hard work of making the item.

  32. 1) This connects to our early discussion about products and where they come from by looking at where it all started. Most of our products that we usually use come from our own house. The products that we throw away are made into new items. We discussed about where all these products came from and the working conditions on making the objects. We also learned about the manufacturing of the object and the process of getting to one location to another.
    2) Up cycling and recycling are both equally important. They are both important because they are good for the environment. Up cycling is where you take old objects and make it into new substances. Recycling uses machines to make other products. Both of these products reduce waste. I would rather do up cycling because you can make old things into something new.
    3) From this activity I learned that by recycling and up cycling they both help the environment in the same ways .By recycling and up cycling we make new products that satisfies everyone and the product doesn’t even look that it was recycled.

  33. 1.) This connects to our earlier discussions about products and where they come from because we are taking old things that we have no use for and making them into things people can use. We also discuss how some materials such as plastic and other non-biodegradable are bad for the Earth if we don’t recycle. Also this connects with the fact that we need to reuse the things that we usually through away, because our decision effects the environment.
2.) Upcycling and recycling are equally important because they both help the environment. Upcycling helps the environment by taking things we don’t use and making it into something that people commonly use and wear. This process also reduces what we consume because instead of going out and buying new items, we just use what we already have and make it into something we need or want. Recycling helps the environment because it allows people to reuse materials that are not biodegradable and that can harm the environment if not recycled. Recycling reduces the garbage placed in landfills, which helps the environment by reducing the need for new landfills.
    3) I learned many things from this activity. I learned that just because I no longer need or use something doesn’t mean that it can’t be used for something else. I learned that the upcycling method is a good way to reduce the items we consume by using what we already have. I learned that it is important to recycle because it helps the Earth and the environment around us by reducing and reusing everyday items. Also the more we recycle, less landfill will cover our Earth making the world a beautiful place to live in. I also learned that the activity reflected a lot on the saying one man’s trash is another man’s treasure because we took things with little value and made them into products of value.

  34. 1. This unit connects to previous discussions about products and where they come from because we talked about how items that would be considered trash are being made into new and improved products. In the past, we discussed the manufacturing of products and where they go to be assembled. These topics relate because they both discuss the processes products go to before they are presented to consumers.
    2. I feel that upcycling and recycling are equally important. I think this is true because not everything is worthy to be upcycled. An item may be cool to upcycle, but if it isn’t going to be put to use, there’s no point in upcycling it. So, for the items that can’t be upcycled, recycling comes in hand.
    3. From this activity, I learned not to be so quick to throw things away. I should think about how I can reuse things or make them into new items before I discard it. Also, after I decide that an item can’t be reused, instead of throwing it in the trash I should recycle so I can participate in making our world a better place to live.

  36. 1. This Upcycling activity connected all of our past discussions because we are taking old recycled materials and creating new fantastic items out of them. We talked about recycling for a while. This is basically what we were doing with the products we made. We talked about how most everyday products are usually being thrown away, but now we are figuring out ways to reuse them.
    2. I feel Upcycling and recycling are equally important. If you recycle something it will just be melted down or put through another process to make products. When you’re Upcycling you are recycling just not taking the old used materials and melting them down to create another something. So, in conclusion if you can’t upcycle something then you can just recycle it.
    3. From this activity I learned how I could be more resourceful with the items that I don’t necessarily need anymore. I also learned that my mom isn’t as crazy as I thought she was. She takes recycling to the extreme but now I know how much we really do need recycling.

  37. 1. This connects to our discussions because in class we talk about how in order to make certain products, some use materials or natural resources that are very harmful to our environment. If everyone up cycled more often, we wouldn’t have to take away an animal’s home in order to make our things that we want. In class, we talked about how forests are constantly being destroyed and how tons of animals are being put in danger every day.
    2. Up cycling and recycling are equally important. With up cycling you are basically taking one thing and making something totally different out of it. Recycling is taking one thing and using it for the same purpose until it isn’t useful anymore. While up cycling is better, recycling is just as important. When some use the front of a sheet of paper, they feel as if the paper is no longer useful. But, it is. That paper that you only used the front of can be used as scratch paper on the back for things such as small reminders, or even on tests/quizzes.
    3. During this activity I learned that even the things you don’t expect can be recycled (even underwear). Recycling is and always will be very good for our environment and we need to start doing it a lot more than most of us do. I’ve also learned little things you throw away such as shirts can be reused to make a variety of different things such as scarves, gloves, and headbands.

1.This unit to me goes back to when we first started talking about how gold is made. We learned that gold is a very beautiful expensive possession to have, but it takes a lot for it to be made until the end product. Referring back to the article we read and discussed in class that many trees get cut down to be able to make space for gold mines. Also all the chemicals that are used to make the end product are contaminating lakes and rivers. When we discussed the article “Gold Rush” the main idea was to learn how gold is actually made and all the hard work that not many people know is put towards the end product. Afterwards we discussed two articles in class which were “The Making of an iPod” and “A Foxconn Breakdown…” during this part of the unit we learned where all the parts of an IPod come from and who benefits. We discussed the prices of each part of the iPod and how the prices change throughout all over the world. In the Foxconn article we learned who are the people working in factories making the parts of the iPod and how they are getting paid little money or no money. All these articles connect to pour discussion of products and where they come because we went in depth of how things are made, where they are made and what it takes to produce the end product. We learned where all the parts of iPod come from who receive the largest profit and how the cost of the iPod is distributed.
2.From my perspective I think that upcycling and recycling are equally important. When you recycle, all the items that you recycle are being reused by machines. Recycling is a good solution so that we are not wasting more materials to make new ones. Instead we are reusing the materials to save energy, fuel or the harmful products that potentially hurt and damage the Earth. Upcycling in the other hand is a great idea as well because we are using the materials form an old product to create a totally different creation. During the process of upcycling you use all the materials or just some of the materials to make a new item.
3.From this activity I have learned a lot to start off I learned that before I buy an item I will take in consideration what materials were used to make this item. Or what did it take to create the final product. I also learned that little things make a really big difference, for example when we were working on our DIY scarfs from an old t-shirts. It amazed me to see how we turned an old t-shirt into a cute scarf and it took no time just a creative mind. The t-shirt I brought in was never used it was just taking up space in my closet and it was almost getting ready to go to the trash, but instead it was turned into a nice scarf. I also learned that instead of throwing out clothes you can do simple things and donate them instead. During this activity everyone in class created a product that showed upcycling I made a simple very easy trivet which is used to put your hot pans or pots on the counter without burning your counter, it is like a cooling pad for example. The trivet was made out of used chopsticks and all it took was little time and a bit of a creative mind. The main thing that I learned was that now before I throw something out I will think of ways I could reuse the items to make new creations that can be useful.

  39. 1) This project connects to our earlier discussions about products and where they come from because we had been talking about different websites that either reuse waste or are the reason for taking it up. I looked up companies such as Waste Management that are responsible for picking up the trash in my community. While I was researching this I also learned that they help inform people of recycling and help them recycle by giving them their own blue bin. We also had to look up companies that upcycled material that would get thrown away and turn them into everyday uses for example the staedtler company that makes my eraser also makes pencils out of recycled newspaper. This all connects because we made products to be sold from everyday materials like my starburst wrapper bracelet or joey’s group’s beautiful twig jars/cups.

    2) I think upcycling and recycling are both equally good because they are both saving the environment and that is all I care about. Upcycling is taking materials you can easily find around you that would otherwise end up in a landfill, like a starburst wrapper, and make it into something someone can use. Recycling is taking a specific item like paper, plastic and glass out of landfills and remaking them into what they already were. For example used paper that was written on can be recycled into writing paper. Basically one is to make accessible materials into goods and the other for essential needs like writing paper for school.

    3) What I learned from this activity is that there are many goods you can make from everyday household items. You can make a snow globe from glitter, a jar, an object such as plastic Easter eggs and glue. You can make a variety of necklaces, bracelets, or hand bands from t – shirts or an old leather belt. I learned that you can save the environment and make something for yourself or a house décor. I also learned that it is worth saving your environment to keep it healthy for a couple of more years and benefit from it yourself.

  40. The recycling unit we just did relates to talking about products and where they come from by getting you thinking about how things are made. Not only does recycling get you thinking about things are made it makes you think about how much work is put into making the everyday things we can do to reuse those products. Everyday people put a lot of time to make expensive stuff but we take little time to think about how we can reuse these items. By using recycled things it gives you a lot of ideas on how to do those things. Upcycling is good but it’s not as good as recycling. When you think of upcycling you think of reusing things to make decorations or jewelry. Recycling is better because things are remade into the stuff we need. For example paper is recycled to make more paper or Plastic is recycled to make water bottles and utensils. The biggest thing I learned from this activity is that no matter what you have in your home you can always use it to make something else. So instead of throwing things away I can use my old stuff to make new stuff and use it or maybe even donate it to those in need. This unit was very unique and I wouldn’t mind doing that ounce a week in class.

  41. 1. The activity connects to our earlier discussions because they we talked about how we can manage of usage of resources. We discussed what make up a product and how it effects our environment and where the product comes from. There are many factors that go into making everyday products for the enjoyment of people. When we see where, how, and who make the products they show negative impacts everywhere.
    2. Upcycling is just as good as recycling. It takes old worn out materials and make them into cool new products. Recycling lets people now that things don’t have to be trown away. They can reuse them to make the same product or help a new product.
    3. I learned that Upcycling is very useful to the environment and people.it helps make new things from old things. I also learned what factors are put in to make every day products for humans.
