After watching the videos in class, read and analyze the news link above and respond to the following questions (remember your expectations for performance).

1) Briefly explain what is happening in Libya.
2) Libya is thousands of miles away in North Africa. How does what is happening there affect you? Explain.

  1. 1. There’s a civil war going on in Libya that’s been happening for the last 6 months. The two sides are the rebels and people who support Gadhafi. Gadhafi has been ruling Libya for 42 years, and the people don’t want him to rule anymore. Over the weekend, the rebels took over about 90% of Tripoli, and caught 3 of Gadhafi’s sons. The United States and NATO are supporting the rebels; but America won’t send troops to Libya. The US might send weapons, but there’s no way to teach them how to use the weapons. Some people are afraid that if the US sends weapons to the rebels terrorists could get the weapons.
    2. Although Libya is thousands of miles away, what’s going on there still affects me. I feel bad for the people who live there. In the article it said that snipers were shooting at cars. It has to be terrifying and dangerous to live in the middle of a war. I think the people are probably excited because they’ll get more freedom if the rebels win, but at the same time there still living in the middle of a war. It makes me appreciate where I live because there aren’t any wars going on , and I don’t have to worry about all of the dangers of a war being fought where you live.

  2. 1) The U.S. is thinking about sending weapons to rebels in Libya instead of sending in troops to help them take down there unwanted leader. But some American’s stated that even if we send them weapons we still need to teach them how to use the weapons correctly. U.S. Army leaders feel that they won’t have time to train them to use the weapons, if the weapons are needed as soon as possible in case situations worsen for the innocent rebels. Gadhafi has been in rule for the past 42 years and uses his powerful military to control all the protesting that goes on. But after his military compound in Tripoli got struck by NATO airstrikes his troops and security fled or surrendered to the rebels who came and took most of the city over. This caused Gadhafi to disappear from sight for a while because he knows that without his troops and security he would be easier for the big group of rebels to take him down.

    2) Even if this conflict is in a whole other country it still affects my life here because as seen on the news it’s just a lot of innocent people being killed and hurt. The main reason is basically for wanting to have a voice in the decision of who they want to be the leader of their country. It makes you feel grateful for having the right of freedom of speech, because you know as a citizen this won’t happen to you. It makes you feel bad for knowing that not everyone else gets the same type of freedom that you get here in the U.S. That’s why if you can’t give them freedom like what you have you can at least try and free them from the horrible dictatorship that they have to suffer with. That’s why I appreciate what the U.S. tries to do by helping out other countries in need.

  3. 1. As seen on the news, the people in Lybia are currently trying to overthrow their current leader, Gadhafi, from office. Protestors say that he is a cruel & corrupt governor. Gadhafi seems to have fled from Tripoli yesterday, as rebel forces started to roll into the capital. Most of his Bab al-Aziziya compound was highly destroyed as airstrikes continued to hit ground. The rebel spokesman Mohammed Abdel- Rahman states that as long as Gadhafi is on the run, Tripoli will remain in danger. The US is helping Lybia by sending army air forces. The problem is that they need weapons on ground, but the US is not sure who exactly would receive the weapons if they were to provide them.
    2. Even though this issue is happening miles away from here, it still affects me. We don’t know if Gadhafi’s followers could seek revenge and try to start a battle with us here in the US. This also affects me in the sense that just knowing how many innocent people are suffering the consequences of somebody else’s cruel actions makes me appreciate everything we have here in the US. I couldn’t even imagine waking up every morning and there being a battle going on nearby.

    Period 1
1.) Libya is at war with their own ruler because they want their ruler to step down. Rebels started protesting against their ruler. The U.S. is determining whether or not they want to send weapons over to the rebels in Libya. The U.S. thinks that terrorist may be involved with the rebels and fear that if they get hold of any weapons they will try something. President Obama feels that Gadhafi should be taken down from ruling but doesn’t want to send U.S. troops to do so.
2.) What is happening in Libya may affect me because Obama is deciding whether or not to send weapons to Libya or not. Obama is worried about sending weapons to Libya because he doesn’t know whether or not there are terrorists on the rebel side of things and what may happen as a result. I feel this may affect me because if the wrong people get ahold of the right weapons it could start a war or a terrorist attack on the U.S. this worries me because I do not want to see anything bad happen as a result of the U.S. trying to help.

  5. 1. -I think Libya rebels are trying take Gadhafi out. Gadhafi will not give up and has the Libya army going against the rebels. The rebels were falling behind so the U.S. helped them by sending jets to bomb the Libya army. Gadhafi is captured but the Libya army is still fighting. Now the rebels need more weapons but the U. S. is not sure if they want to send weapons because there could be terrorists in the Libya rebel group and it would be like giving our enemy weapons.
    2. -It would affect me because if the U.S. does decide to give the rebels weapons and some do end up being terrorists then they could try attacking us. It would be a whole new problem to take care of.

  6. 1. Moammar Gadhafi is the leader of Libya. Most of Gadhafi’s security forces fled or surrendered when rebel forces came to the capital Sunday and took control of most of the city. Three of Gadhafi’s sons are under arrest. Mohammed Abdel-Rahman, rebel spokesperson, said “danger is still there” as long as Gadhafi remains on the run. “The real moment of victory is when Gadhafi is captured," said Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, who is the head of the rebel National Transitional Council. The rebels have no clue to where Gadhafi might be. President Barack Obama said the situation in Libya reached a tipping point recently after a five-month bombing campaign. The warplanes have hit at least 40 targets in and around Tripoli in the past two days. The Obama administration said that the US believes that the rebels have 90 percent of the capital. Tripoli is encircled by Gadhafi brigades positioned at the outskirts of the capital, in camps. Revelers flocked to Green Square, the symbolic heart of the fading Gadhafi regime. They flashed the "V" for victory sign. Ashraf Halati, a 30-year-old resident, said that they came out today with a bit of freedom and that they still don’t believe that it’s happening. The compound was taken over and the previous inhabitants left in haste. Gadhafi will be remembered through the acts he committed in Libya and the world, by political assassinations, arrests and executions and oppression of all the Libyan people who wanted to oust him from the beginning of this revolution.

    2. In a way that this affect me would be that I wouldn’t want this happening in the United States. The reason for that would be because I like the freedom I have right now and I wouldn’t want to be dictated by someone who is mean. Actually I wouldn’t want to be dictated at all. I also feel bad for the people who had to go through that because I wouldn’t want to do it and I wouldn’t want my family going through that or even strangers.

  7. The rebels are trying to get rid of Gadhafi’s who is the leader of Libyan who has done some really bad crimes and want to get rid of but they don’t have to arms to take him and is military out. But some of the rebels have taken some of its military weapons but don’t really know how to use it. The United States and other countries have help out the rebels by wiping out some of Gadhafi’s military to help out the rebels by using aircraft. The united states may bring in troops to help out or send them weapons the problems is that they wouldn’t know how to use the weapons and it too late to teach they how to use it. A other problem with sending them weapons is that they can get in to the hands of are most deadly enemy terrorist because they maybe be helping out the rebels. So the United States has send in some CIA agents to Libyan to try to figure out stuff and found out more of what’s happing there. But they cannot find Gadhafi’s and is nowhere to be found. Some of the rebels said that it is not a victory or over until they captured Gadhafi’s. the sad thing is he had all the military men on his side to protected him and most of them fled the scene or surrendered when the rebel force came into the capital. Obamas administration said that at least 90% of the capitol is under rebel’s control.
This has affected me because it a bad thing to happen and if was to happen here in America I would at least want a other countries help if we can’t handle it and there incent people there that are getting called by sniper and can’t even go outside to get or do anything all day and just half to sit inside all day or they can take the chance of getting killed by missed fried weapons or snipers that have been coming around the capitol.

    1. There is lots of war and fighting in Libya with rebels against the army. But we are helping the rebels with air support trying to take down Gadhafi. Gadhafi’s rein of forty two years will come to an end as soon as they capture him. The rebels want us to help with ground support but we won’t do it because we’ll lose too many men. Their very close to capturing him because they already have ninety present of the capital in their control and arrested three of his kids and now they have them on the run but have lost his trail.
    2. The war affects me because the United States is giving air support for five months to the rebels and dropping bombs on the army and even though the pilots are not ground troops they still get attacked because the army has anti- aircraft guns and mortars. But if this fight keeps going on it might start a global war with multiple countries are in the cross fire or in it and many people will die in the global war. I think the rebels should find Gadhafi before he starts a war.

  9. 1. In Libya there is a Civil War going on because the people want Moammar Gadhafi to step down out of leadership because of what he is doing in their country. There are some people who are on the people’s side and want him out of leadership and there are some who are on Gadhafi’s side and are defending Gadhafi and his territories. They’re each fighting for something that means something dear to them. Whether it’s their country or their leader.

    2. I think the Civil War in Libya is affecting me because the US has sent some air support to try and help Libya. I personally think that the US has nothing to do with the war going on in Libya. We have no business with them and we shouldn’t be getting in their business. If they ask for help it is one thing, but for us to just send air support on our own, then I don’t think it is right. We could be using the air support for fighting for our own country rather than for something else we have no business in getting into. That is just my opinion.

  10. 1. what is going on over there is that Rebels are trying to get rid Moammar Gadhafi because he is like a communist and people don’t want him to be in power anymore. So rebels are fighting other rebels that like having Moammar Gadhafi in power but the rebels that don’t want Gadhafi to be in power are out manned and out gunned. That is also why the United States of America and other European allies are trying to help the rebels who don’t want Gadhafi in power but can only send fighter jets to fire at the rebels who want Gadhafi in power. U.S.A also wants to send weapons but are afraid they might fall into the hands of bad people and U.S.A can’t send soldiers their because they said they would not get involved on ground and if they send he weapons nobody will be able to help train them in how to use the weapons but president Barack Obama has not yet said if he will be sending weapons overseas.

    2. It affects us over here because if president Obama does send those weapons to north Africa and there are bad people that get a hold of those weapons and learn how to use them they could try to come over to the United States of America and try to take over or hurt us here and the also Gadhafi could want to attack us for helping out the rebels that don’t want him in power or he could send terrorists over here to hurt us.

    1. Libya is a war zone. This article is proof of the destruction that is happening in that country as the rebels( or good guys) fight for freedom from the rule of Gadhafi who has been in power a little too long. The government officials have trapped themselves in the city of Tripoli. Outside of Tripoli, almost all of eastern and western Libya is now under rebel control. Many people fear for their life in this country. America and other European countries are providing the rebels with air raids on the officials “but it’s not enough,” says one rebel leader. The American nation fear’s that if they give weapons and men that they may fall into the hands of the terrorists that are mixed in with the rebels. The rebels were losing terribly before help came, but are now just outside of victory. Though many rebels believe that victory is not possible until Gadhafi is dead. It is still unknown if Gadhafi has fled the country.
2.This situation has affected me here in the United States because the world recently has become more GLOBALIZED. Also we have had to start fearing about issues with terrorism in the United States. And like it said in the movie “the U.S. is afraid that the weapons they provide to the rebels might end up in the hands of terrorists that are in the group.”

  12. 1. There is 6 month old civil war going on in Libya against the Libyan rebels and people that support Gadhafi. The rebels started protesting against the ruler Gadhafi. Gadhafi is nowhere to be found, and the people of Libya want him to be captured. He has been ruling 42 years and they want to put a stop to it. Libyans have been fighting over the past weekend. With that being said the United States wants to send weapons over to help the rebels, however Barack Obama believes that terrorists may be involved with this. Obama also believes that over 90% of the capital is under rebel control. Now almost all eastern and western Libya is under rebel control.

    2. I feel kind of bad for the people in Libya. All this shooting and bombs and stuff that’s going on. It may really affect us because Obama is debating whether to send weapons or not. Also the rebels could be terrorists trying to blow us up. So he wouldn’t want to give the weapons to the wrong people or let them get in the wrong hands. They could start war against us. So giving them weapons could start another controversy or another terrorists attack on the U.S. and we really wouldn’t want anything to happen to is.

  13. 1. In Libya there is a war in progress. The war is between the rebels and the pro-Gadhafi people. Gadhafi has been missing since Monday. When the rebels invaded the capital most of Gadhafi’s men either surrendered or ran that night. The rebels occupied most if the capital city that night . The leader of the rebels thinks that real victory will not be claimed until Gadhafi is arrested. Obama thinks that the limit for this war has been reached. U.s officials were not in contact with gadhafi during the obstruction of Tripoli.

    2. It affects me because I think of the little kids who live there. It’s so violent hat they probably can’t leave out of their house. It’s ridiculous that children can’t go outside and play because they are scared they might get shot or killed. They can’t even celebrate important events. We have it made in America because we dnt have to worry about bombs blowing up the school or neighborhoods. These people have to hope that they will make it through another day. The rebels are doing a good thing but at what cost people dying everyday and people losing their homes.

  14. Libya is having a civil war that has been going on for about six months. The rebels are going against the loyalists who are loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. The people in Libya believe he is a harsh and brutal dictator and the rebels are currently trying to overthrow him in attempt to gain freedom. Gadhafi has been the leader of Libya for 42 years. Rebels are still trying to find Gadafi because he has fled and the people of Libya say that the danger will remain until Gadhafi has been captured. Obama believes that the rebels have about 90% control over the capital. In attempts to help the rebels, Obama is still deciding whether he should send troops or weapons. A lot of Gadhafi’s Bab al-Aziziya compound was really destroyed. It seems as if victory for the rebels might happen.
What is going on in Libya may affect me because Obama is deciding whether he is going to send American troops or weapons. If Obama sends troops it is possible that someone from my family could be sent. Also if Obama sends weapons there is a possibility that they will be sent into the enemy’s hands. If that happens it could affect the United Statesin a very negative way. Personally I don’t think the United States should be involved.

  15. 1. In Libya, many of its residents are currently attempting to over through their leader, Moammar Gadhafi. Gadhafi however is nowhere to be found which the U.S was un-aware that Gadhafi had fled. The U.S has thought about sending weapons over to Libya to help, but they don’t know where the weapons might end up. Gadhafi has been in rule for the past 42 years and many of the residents of Libya state that he is harsh and cruel and mean. Obama believes that about 90% of the rebels have taken control of the Capital. Rebels are running all over Libya with weapons but are not trained to use them because there isn’t enough time to train.
    2. Even though this is happening miles away, I think this would affect me because what if since we are trying to help the Rebels take out Gadhafi that Gadhafi might try to harm the U.S. This also affects me because it makes me think of all of the little children and people there that are getting killed for no apparent reason and how lucky we are in the U.S because none of this stuff is going on. We don’t wake up every morning and hear gun shots outside our bedroom window.

  16. 1. In Libya, there are rebels out looking for a man named Gadhafi. In 1969, Gadhafi overthrew the Libyan monarchy and he has been in power ever since. Gadhafi and his loyalists are launching attacks on the city of Tripoli. Rebels are trying to protect the city of Tripoli. Gadhafi will always be remembered for the crimes he committed such as assassinations and executions.
    2. If president Obama decides to send guns to Libya, terrorists can get those weapons and try to kill us. In Libya, Gadhafi is attacking protestors and killing innocent people. While he is doing all of this, the U.S. is trying to plan an attack on him and kill him. For the U.S. to plan all these attacks, we have to use money that could be used for school funds. That is how it is affecting me here in the U.S.

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1) What is happening in Libya is rebels wanting their leader, Moammar Gadhafi, to step down from his leadership. They want this because they say he is a bad and too strict leader. Now because of this Moammar Gadhafi has run and was nowhere to be found on Monday. Even though some were happy of the news others were scared because of a war that started between rebels and some of Moammar Gadhafi loyal people that don’t have a problem with him. Because the remaining number of regime loyalists that haven’t surrendered or fled they are asking the U.S. for more weapons. Obama has not yet reached a decision for the fear of giving the right weapons to the wrong people such as terrorists that might be mixed into the rebels or loyalists.

    2) Even though Libya is thousands of miles away it does affect people. It affects me, because here in the U.S. if Obama decides to give out the necessary weapons to the people in Libya and it falls into the wrong hands of for example terrorists there could be a bad ending. Some of our worst enemies with the weapons they need could very easily bomb and destroy the U.S. If this does happen relatives’, friends, and loved ones would be injured or dead. It could also be the area I live in that gets bombed and that will affect me by me getting injured or dying.

  18. 1.There is a war going on in Libya, between Libya and their ruler because, they want their ruler to step down. Gadhafi will not give up and has the Libya army going against the rebels. The rebels are controlling the city and taking things over until Gadhafi surfaces and surrenders. They won’t stop until they find him and take him down. They’ve demolished homes, stores, large tourist attractions, etc. and it’s affecting everyone in Libya. Hopefully Gadhafi will surrender and soon this war will be over.
2.What’s happening in Libya is affecting the U.S. because we’re sending are troops over to help fight the war and every day we are losing more and more troops. I think that this will really affect us because Obama is debating whether or not he should send weapons over to Libya.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. In Libya, a war is occurring between Ghadafi (Leader of Libya) and Rebels (protestors who want Ghadafi replaced as leader). The Rebels have come to a point where they’re in need of weapons to defeat Gadhafi’s troops. President Obama Agrees that Libya and the rest of the world would be much better without Ghadafi, and that the Rebels need help. But, Obama doesn’t want American Troops on Libya grounds. He thinks it’s safer to send weapons to the Rebels. But Americans are afraid that the weapons could possibly end up in the hands of our Terrorist enemies. Also, the Rebels don’t have knowledge on how to use these weapons, and there’s no time for training.
    2. Even with Libya being miles away from America, this war has impact on me. It makes my sympathetic for the innocent people in Libya who have to worry about how they’re going to be protected, and the people who weren’t protected and were killed. And, for all we know Ghadafi could be in America, because as of now nobody knows where he’s located. He could plot a war with the US, which would affect me even more.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Libya country president named Gadhafi is allowing people that are not skilled with the weapons shoot and use the weapons and while their using the weapons wrapped up in the process their harming innocent people and making them fear for their life. Most people are afraid that the weapons would get into the hands of terrorist. Many people want Gadhafi out of owner ship and he is not too happy about it so when he see protesters he plans to get rid of them. Obama has not decided to send the weapons overseas. Many people still believe that as long as Gadhafi is in office danger is still near. Many rebels and people in Libya as well as the United States had no idea that Gadhafi had left Libya. Since the incident with Tripoli the NATO representatives and Americans as well as Obama hasn’t heard from Gadhafi. It strongly believe it has an effect on me because terrorist may get the weapons or bombs and come to North Carolina and blow us up and kill many of people.

    ReplyDelete
  21. 1) For about 6 months a civil war has been taking place in the nation of Libya. The populace has rose up against their leader and have been trying to free their nation from his rule claiming he is a dictator and unjust. Gadhafi the leader of Libya and who the rebels are fighting has been in control of the nation for the last 42 years. Currently NATO forces are conducting a bombing raid on Libya to assist the rebels but the rebel army has said that they need more help. They are asking for NATO to now assist them on ground campaign. The US right now is debating on sending the rebel army weapons and teaching them how to us them. Though some are afraid that the weapons we give will end up in the hands of terrorist organizations.

    2) This can affect us like it has before in the past. The US has given many governments, rebel groups, and others weapons only for it later to come back and haunt us. For example it’s very similar to how we armed and assisted the resistance fighters in Afghanistan. Who later became the Taliban and were partially or fully responsible for the world trade center bombings. So we could by arming these rebels be repeating the mistakes we made in the past. Also though if we don’t arm the rebels then these people perhaps will resent us for abandoning them in their time of need. Thus making more enemy’s any way, in the end its somewhat like a lose lose situation in my personal opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1) In the third paragraph it says that they don't know where Gadhafi is at. They don't even know if he is in Lybia.

    2) How does this affect me? Well, it sort of doesn’t. I mean, I’ll be praying that everything goes well. But I guess because we might be sending American troops over there to help them out might affect me. If we send American troops over to Libya to help them that means that there will be less troops fighting for our freedom. Not to be selfish, or anything.

1.) Libya is a very violent country right now. The rebels have lost a lot of land they had obtained and are almost out of admonition. The rebels want their former leader Moammar Gadhafi to step down from office, but he refuses to. But he was nowhere to be found Monday. Many rebels have weapons that they seized from the soldiers but will run out shortly. But if they hate the ruler ship of this dude than I guess they`re doing what they think that’s right. I guess you could say they`re are self-advocating there selves.

2.) But all this stuff does affect me because if I didn’t know any of this stuff than I wouldn’t really do so great on this prompt. But other than the effects of my grades. It affects me personally too, because I feel bad for the people who are not involved because there suffering in all the possible ways you could imagine. Because when other people are hurt I kind of feel bad for them, even though I don’t know them personally. I just wish that I could just wish all of this away, but I know that I can`t because things don’t work out just like that. Lastly, if one person came up with the idea that they should try to overpower the government and why? But also think about this who would get the weapons if the US does get involved fully into the war?

1.) What is happening in Libya is that they are having a Civil War. They are at war with themselves because they want Moammar Gadhafi to step down. So far they have arrested three of his sons but he still won’t give up. They have had numerous airstrikes and attacks on his compounds that have forced many of Gadhafi loyalists to surrender. Even though they have had all this help from NATO and the US they still need more help, but no US troops will go to Libya to help them. So, the US is thinking about sending weapons to them but there are some issues with that like the weapons going into the hands of terrorist groups. Also, if we give them weapons they are going to have to need training.

2.) Even though Libya is thousands of miles away it still affects us here in the US. It affects us because the US doesn’t want Gadhafi to be a leader anymore so they want to help them. But, if we help the wrong people terrorist can make attacks on us. Also, the weapons that they can send to them would be bought using US tax money. My parents are tax payers so they could be funding the rebels or terrorist.

  25. 1. About six months ago there was a civil war in Libya between the rebels who wanted Gadhafi out of office, and everyone else who wanted to keep Gadhafi. The rebels were protesting and Gadhafi sent the Libya military to take control. The US found out and started helping the rebels but they never touched the ground. So while the US military was helping from above, the people of Libya were on ground with no weapons and no time for training. Obama is afraid that if we sent weapons to Libya that they would fall into the wrong hands. If there are terrorist mixed in with the rebels, the US could be in serious trouble.
    2. Even though Libya is thousands of miles away, it still affects me because our military is helping them and terrorist or assassins might be mixed in with the rebels. Also what the people are going through must be terrifying. Living in the middle of a war knowing you could be shot and killed frightens me. I am thankful that I am living in America than in the middle of a civil war.

  26. 1.) Libya is under control of Gadhafi a cruel dictator, but there has been an uprising of rebels. Currently the rebels have control of Tripoli a city in Libya. The main objective the rebels have is to overthrow Gadhafi not kill him. The rebels currently have captured 3 of Gadhafi’s sons. The USA wants to give the rebels guns so they can over throw him but they are unsure if the guns would get to the rebels.
2.) The conflict in Libya affects me by raising gas prices. Libya is sitting lots of oil that the U.S. needs and I like to go hang out with my friends but gas prices are so high it cost too much to go out.

  27. What’s happening in Libya is that the rebels are trying to remove Gadhafi from office after his 42-year ruling of Libya, but Gadhafi is still on the run and as long as he’s on the run danger will still be there in Libya. The rebels still has no idea where Gadhafi is and whether or not if he’s even in the area of Tripoli, even the Obama administration official said that the U.S. had no indication that Gadhafi had even left Libya. The situation in Libya in the past few days has worsened as a bombing campaign has already taken place. Intense gun battles have erupted throughout the days in Libya and clashes has broken out earlier in the day at Gadhafi’s compound that had opened fire on the rebels. The U.S. believes that 90 percent of the capital is under rebel control, while regime loyalist still control Gadhafi’s hometown of Sire and the southern city of Sabah. Even though some rebels claimed they were in control of most of Tripoli, they still appear to be defensive, ducking for cover during frequent clashes with regime fighters.

Even though Libya is thousands of miles away it still affects me because I think that it is really sad that so many innocent people are getting killed for no reason. I also think that it affects the U.S. because we are worried about the bombing and fight out breaks in Libya. I think that it also worries me because I am worried about it spreading and affecting bigger parts of the world that would probably danger some of us in the long run. It also affects me because I don’t really agree with all the conflict that is going on in Libya and I think that they really need to stop before things get too much out of hand. I think that Gadhafi should go ahead and turn himself in to keep the commotion and war down so that innocent kids and people can be safe.

  28. 1. In Libya there is a civil war occurring that has been going on for 5 months , they have a leader of the name Maommar Gadhafi who cannot be found. Gadhafi has been ruling for 42 years now and there were two different forces one who was fighting for Gadhafi and the other was who was going against him. When the rebel forces rolled in and took control of most of the city Gadhafi s security forces fled and also three of his sons were captured and arrested. Obama administration official said that over time 90% of the capital was under the rebel control. The rebels were getting support by the United States and by NATO. Some worries that the United States might be sending weapons to the wrong people they are also trying to decide if they send weapons who will teach the rebels how to us them.
    2. Even though Libya is thousands of miles away the things happening there still affects me. I feel bad for the individuals live there and the ones that are no part of anything dealing with the war. It also affects me because since they can’t find him then that mean he can be anywhere so that means that my life can also be in danger. But at the same time I respect where I am located because we as citizens of North Carolina do not have any violent wars.

  29. 1) In Libya the rebels are trying to arrest Gadhafi, the Libyan leader who has been ruling for 42 years. The reason behind this is simple they don’t like him as their leader anymore. The rebels have lost almost all of the ground they gained. The rebels have no weapons and if we were to send them we would be in some danger because they need weapons on the ground and there is a risk of them falling into terrorists hands. Gadhafi said he is fighting his protestors to his “last drop of blood”. So why are Gadhafi and his security forces fleeing while three of his sons were arrested?

    2) Even though this is happening in another country I still feel for the innocent people. They have nothing to do with this but they are stuck in the middle, some even dying just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. This Civil War affects me because it puts my life in danger in a way. But at the same time Gadhafi could try to hide in North Carolina and that could bring the war over here.

  30. 1.) Currently, Libya is in the midst of a terrifying Civil War. Libyans have had to endure the reign of a power hungry and corrupt man and they have finally revolted and are now fighting for their freedom. Gadhafi is currently on the run and nowhere to be found, and until his location is determined and he is killed or captured; danger is still lurking beneath the surface. The United States, NATO, and the Libyan rebels are all in alliance and they all have one goal in common and that is to make the Gadhafi loyalists surrender. The United States is debating on whether to send out weapons to support the rebels, but if those weapons get in the wrong hands; the U.S. could be put in jeopardy. Around 90% of the capital is under the control of rebels, but it is way too dangerous and the conditions are way too violent for a public celebration; even though they’ve accomplished almost sovereign control they still are ducking for cover and fighting for their lives. Fights are erupting left and right, and the rebels are risking their lives to ensure that the battle is victorious and that their corrupt dictator from the past will never hold a position of authority or power.
2.) What currently is taking place in Libya affects me on an emotional level because I know what it is like to feel oppressed and like you have no freedom and it is a terrible feeling. I am very happy that the Libyan rebels are beginning to obtain their freedom that has been long awaited. I also believe that if the U.S. sends out reinforcements to the rebels and it by any chance gets in the wrong hands, we could also be put in jeopardy. I’d imagine that it must be utterly terrifying to live in the midst of such a chaotic war, and they are fighting against their own people. I believe that some of the Gadhafi loyalists are probably not even that fond of what they are fighting for and wish for it to be over. What about the children, I can testify that just being in the midst of an argument is unsettling, what about being in the midst of a war!?

  31. 1. For the last six months a civil war has been taking place in Libya, a country in northern Africa, against the Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. After six weeks of heavy protesting the people of Libya are started to use force taking over the capital, Tripoli, in which succeeding and capturing 90 percent. The U.S. helped the rebels by bombing targets in and around Tripoli, because our government feels that Gadhafi is a threat.
    2. Even though all of these acts of violence are happing so far away they affect me. There are two main ways I think it could, one being that it makes me feel sorry for them that they have to deal with that every day but at the same time happy for they are winning there war. The other reason being if terrorist get ahold of the weapons Obama could supply then we could have another problem, a much worst one.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. Libya can’t win. The rebels have been trying to overthrow Moammar Gadhafi for at least the past six months. Rebels state that Gadhafi has been a cruel and unfair leader to their country. Even though ninety percent of the people in Libya are protesting against Gadhafi, he refuses to step down. The scariest part of this is that the rebels are not trained to be handling fire arms. The Libyan army has been trying to take the rebels down, but the soldiers are either fleeing the country or surrendering. To be honest, there is no way to stop the rebels. We do have the power to stop all of it. But Obama refuses to send troops over. He has already sent jets over the country. It is also heard that Obama has sent CIA operatives to find what the struggle is between the rebels and Gadhafi. Until Gadhafi steps down from power, the rebels will not stop protesting, shooting, and killing. They have even taken over Tripoli, the capital of Libya. What will happen next?
    2. Even though the rebels have taken over, there are many ways that it will affect me personally, and the U.S. The biggest reason why I am worried about Libya is our oil. We rely on them for a percentage of our oil. If Libya is taken over completely, and with Gadhafi out of power, we will have a better chance of getting more oil which equates to lower gas prices.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1. In Libya right now, the long-reining leader, Moammar Gadhafi has gone missing and no one knows where he is. Danger is still among the Libyans though. This is because the loyalists are still on the move. The Rebel forces want to get rid of Gadhafi’s leadership; kick him out of his power. It is almost like a war, the rebels plan to fight the Loyalists for power over Libya. But Libya doesn’t need troops; they need weapons, therefore the U.S. is considering sending supplies. The only problem is, they don’t know how to use the weapons so, they would need teaching.
    2. This is affecting me because the U.S. is considering sending weapons over without really knowing where they are going. Like in the article, the American government is helping out with the supplies for the Rebels to gain power over Libya, but those weapons could be going to terrorists hiding within rebel troops. Therefore, they would be receiving materials to help them potentially kill many people. Also, this is affective to me because this money the U.S. is spending to help the Rebels (or even terrorists maybe) could be funded to something that has been more researched. To where we know exactly where are money is going, possibly toward Health Care or school budgets.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1) The rebel forces don’t like there leader Gadhafi and want to throw him out of the rebel group. Gadhafi had been ruling for 42 years. He left from Libya and they are trying to capture him. Rebels have some weapons from Gadhafi but they don’t know how to use them. The US is trying to decide to send weapons in Libya. They are concerned who will get the weapons over there so they are going to send CIA to talk to the leaders. The US thinks that 90 percent of the capital is under rebel control. The rebels want weapons to defeat Gadhafi’s group. They don’t think that Gadhafi will come back so they stole all his weapons.
    2) Libya is far away from here but this still affects me because I feel bad for the people who don’t want to be involved in anything that is going on in their country and people who are scared. If I was in Libya I would be scared because there shooting randomly and they don’t care who gets hurt. I wouldn’t want to be around a person who doesn’t know how to use a weapon because I can get hurt or die. If the US sends weapons to Libya they might be sending a weapon to terrorist and they are killing people.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1. Libya has turned into a battle zone. The rebel group is fighting to overthrow their unwanted Libyan leader, Moammar Gadhafi, in hopes of gaining freedom. However, the Libyan leader for the past four decades is nowhere to be seen and the US was unaware that he had fled. The rebels caught three of his sons but are struggling to overthrow Gadhafi without proper weapons. They are only using the weapons that were obtained from Gadhafi’s army. The rebels went into Tripoli and took control of the city of two million residents. As long as Gadhafi is on the run, Tripoli will remain in danger. Obama is attempting to help the rebels, but hasn’t decided whether or not to send troops or weapons. He is scared that by sending the weapons, terrorists that are mixed in with the rebel group, will get ahold of them. Gadhafi is a brutal and corrupt leader and most people agree that without him as leader, Libya would be a better place.
    2. Even though this is happening thousands of miles away, this event affects me emotionally because I would be very terrified to be living in a battle zone. Innocent women, men and children are losing their lives because of this, even as we speak. Yes, the residents of Libya would gain more freedom by overthrowing Gadhafi, but all the killings and shootings are just outrageous. I don’t understand how people could live through this. I feel a bit unhappy when I hear people are losing their lives, but at the same time I feel more appreciative that this isn’t happening in the US. Another thing is that we can’t really predict if the loyalists would try to seek revenge on the US for providing weapons or troops to the rebels, and that just worries me somewhat. Overall, it’s sad to hear that this is happening, but at the moment I feel more proud that I live in the US and don’t have to worry about a war that’s going on in my country.

  36. 1. Libya has been having this Civil War for 6 months now and Libya is trying to rid Gadhafi of his power because they think he is a cruel and terrible leader. They don’t know whether to send troops or weapons to Libya, because if they send troops then there won’t be enough weapons and if they send weapons some troops don’t know how to use them properly. The rebels need help on the ground so the U.S is helping out by trying to wipe out Gadhafi’s military. Removal of Gadhafi’s leadership will take the power of political reasons, his troops and time. Gadhafi has been in rule for 42 years and once we capture they capture him that leadership will come to an end. Tripoli got hit by NATO airstrikes and his troops surrendered to the rebels which cause Gadhafi to disappear out of sight. He knew that without his support and troops that he was going down even easier and harder.
    2. Some ways that this happening affects me is that right now since Libya is in the Middle East they are a more vital oil supply and since the oil prices are going up there, the gas prices directly go up here then affecting me in my world as an American. Another way this affects me as an American is since we are trying to throw Gadhafi out of power, a new leader must take his place. Since we have already grown to know Gadhafi and his ways and how to deal with him delicately, a new leader could be just as dangerous if not more so than Gadhafi.

    1. What is happening in Libya is that the Libyan rebels are trying to overthrow Gadhafi government. With the help U.S air support we have managed to support their struggle. Although this is true the fight for freedom is still on the ground. With them being rebels the demand for weapons is very high. Also with their inexperienced comes trouble because they don’t know how to use the weapons if we were to send weapons. Also if we did how would we know which rebel group to send them to? Meanwhile president Obama has decided not to send any troops to Libya for their rebellion. With the mix of rebel groups there could be terrorist groups that would want to take for themselves.

    2. What happens in Libya that affects me is that if terrorists are able to get ahold of these weapons is they could start attacking us. Also what we do with the Libyans might affect other countries and we could be in another war. War is something that we don’t need now because our economy is really in a slump.

  38. 1) A 6-month-old civil war in Libya has cause a lot of trouble for the people who live there. "The real moment of victory is when Gadhafi is captured." Mustafa Abdel-Jalil; head of the rebel National Transitional Council, told a news conference. The people in Libya want to kick their 42-year ruler Gadhafi out of power. The USA promised to not get involved on Libyan grounds but they are helping the rebels by destroying the loyalists’ weapons on air. The rebels are tired of their ruler and demand to get a new one, they have no idea where Gadhafi is or what is he doing. Obama wants to help them by giving them weapons so they can beat the loyalist but there is also a con to that and it would that the weapons could fall in the wrong hands. The wrong hands meaning the USA could mistake the rebels end up giving the weapons to terrorist. The US believes that about 90% of the capital is under rebel control.

    2) It affects others and me because since we don’t know where Gadhafi is we could be in danger of him planning something against our country. I feel like if he does do that the USA might go to war against the loyalist too, even though Obama has said he will not get involved in it. I also feel bad for innocent people being wounded or killed for their freedom. I think the children who live there are going will be more affected by this, they are probably scared but maybe in a few years they will learn that they can also stand up for their beliefs. I am happy that the Libyans are standing up for what they believe in but its sad to see many people die in order to accomplish their goal.

  39. There is a country named Libya and it’s a major trouble. The president is being over thrown by rebels. They want freedom and the president is not given them that opportunity. The government in Libya is mad that they are citizens are rebelling against them so the governor send the army troops and stated defending himself. Countries outside of Libya specially the U.S.A re worried. The U.S.A tried to help them but it has been no use. The only ground they gained has been lost. They also send guns but the rebels don’t know how to use them. The U.S.A. is between crossroads because they want Libyans to defend themselves but they can’t send troops to go teach them how to use them. The U.S. are also worried that if they trust it to the wrong hands they can use it against themselves and we would be helping its leader Moammar Gadhafi, to kill more of its people. Until now we have no idea what Obama is going to decide but one of the rebels leader said they really need the government to send the guns so they don’t fall.
Even though Libya is many thousands of miles from here, this event does affect me because we can be looking a new war. And I think to myself don’t we already have enough dying in the world to have more? There are provably many children missing their parents. Many wives are worried that their husbands might not come home. Over the years we have learn that death is the only thing that come out of wars provably right now there is many deaths and many injure. Many people with no were to stay, scare or even hungry. It’s terrifying to know kids are living in the middle of this. I feel extremely bad for all those people who were just at the wrong place and time that had to die for no reason. I hope they make a better country out of Libya in the future, because all the lives that died have to be justified.

  40. In Libya the leader Moammar Gadhafi is hiding from his own country because there are rebels uprising against him. The head of the rebels said “the real moment of victory is when Gadhafi is captured.” A rebel commander said more than 4000 fighters were in the final push to bring down the regime. They were hiding in gas stations hopping to see or capture Gadhafi. On Monday, rebels man check points on the western approaches to the city handing out candy to motorist and inquiring their destinations.
I feel that the situation has nothing to do with me but, I think the rebels did something they could be proud of. The rebels did what they had to do to get what they wanted and in the end they got it. Here that’s like studying to get an A for a test and you get one. I just think that the rebels have done a great job and I hope that they make Libya in to a place that is good for everyone there.

    1) The ruler of Libya Gadhafi has disappeared and is nowhere to be found. There is a war occurring in Libya, it’s been occurring for about six months. The people from Libya want to throw out the ruler “Gadhafi”. Our president Barack Obama is also thinking of sending weapons to help Libya get rid of the ruler Gadhafi but his decision hasn’t been final. The rebels have surrender and protested against the ruler Gadhafi. So far they have arrested three of Gadhafi’s sons but he still plans to take over somehow and won’t give up.
    2) I think that it can affect us in a way that the weapons our president sends to help out Libya may fall in the wrong hands for example terrorists; these conflicts may involve the U.S. This is an issue that can cause war in the U.S. or terrorist could attack U.S. With this event happening it makes me think of lucky we are that we don’t see these types of things occur near us. This could also be a huge impact on us because we don’t know where Gadhafi has fled or whether or not he’s planning to attack us the U.S in general.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1) For 42 years Moammar Gadhafi has been the Libyan leader. His ruling is not the best so there is Libyan rebels’ trying to overthrow Gadhafi’s office. Basically there has been a war between Gadhafi’s supporters and the rebels going on for six months. America and NATO were on the rebel’s side helping them. Gadhafi and its supporters were forced to back off and retreat at some parts. The U.S. does not want to send more soldiers out now that they were supposed to be back. President Obama wants to send weapons but the rebels are going to have to be taught how to use them correctly. The problem with sending weapons to Libyan rebels is that we don’t really know who is receiving them and we might be sending them to our worst enemy’s as in terrorist. Even though we have some of Gadhafi’s sons are under arrest, Moammar has disappeared from Libya and is nowhere to be found.
    2) The rebellion or war against Gadhafi and the rebellions affects me in the reason that if we send weapons and or troops the money we spend on that can affect our economy in a bad way. I think we are worrying too much on something we don’t belong in. Yes it is horrible at the thought that those poor innocent people are going to suffer more if they don’t beat Gadhafi. This connects to us in the way that our economy is already bad and getting worst with us paying attention to it and imagine if we didn’t pay attention to it, how would it be. I think we should lend them weapons, help and or money for them to buy weapons but make them pay back so that with rate that money we are going to get back increases which will help us in our economy.

  43. 1. A coup is currently taking place in Libya. Rebels are protesting against their nation’s leader, Moammar Gadhafi’s rule. The U.S is currently trying to decide whether to send weapons or troops to support rebel forces. They fear that there may be potential terrorist among the rebels. The rebels have the upper hand as of now but Gadhafi loyalists continue to attack.
    2. The situation happening in Libya affects me because my country could choose to get involved with the rebel forces there. If something were to go wrong my country would also be held partially responsible. There could even be a situation where there could be terrorist threats in the U.S.

  44. 1) Protesters in Libya want Kaddafi to give up his power in office they are tired of his ways and are desperate for a change. To handle the situation Kaddafi sent out troops to open fire to push back the rebels. Libya troops are better equipped and trained to fight than the rebels are. The rebels were able to push back the troops with a little help from the US air force and were able to take the troops weapons. Obama has made a promise that no US troop will be on the ground in Libya fighting. With the promise made Obama is unsure on whether to send over weapons to help but the only problem is there not trained and we do not want to put weapons in the hands of our worst enemies. The US sent over some C.I.A cooperatives to see which rebels will be part of the new government when Kaddafi is overthrown. Many rebels in Libya have hope for they have seen signs of defeat in Kaddafi
    2) Obama feels that the world and Libya would be a better place if Kaddafi left his place in office. After helping out by sending US air force to help push back some of the troops fire Obama isn’t sure on whether to send weapons over or not. If he does those same weapons can be used by our worst enemies. No matter how many miles away it is things that happen at two different sides of the world could have a domino effect. I think that this will affect us a less dramatic way than if we had US troops on Libya soil. By Obama getting involved in the first place there may be issues in America. A lot of people may be mad that the US troops got involved even though they aren’t on the ground

  45. 1) Briefly explain what is happening in Libya. The country of Libya is under attack my Libyan rebels that want a new government. The leader of Libya is now in heading from the rebels. The rebels took almost all of the capital. On Sunday night over 4,000 rebels took about 90% of Tripoli. There is about 2 million people on the Mediterranean coast, but in large areas where people are staying were all banned from there house, and most of the stores where closed as well. Soon after that more of Gadhafi’s men started attacking the rebels again, with snipers in building and a anti air gun pounding the compound.
    2) Libya is thousands of miles away in North Africa. How does what is happening there affect you? Explain. It would affect us because people would stop working and start joining the rebels. If people stopped working then we most likely not grow any more food that the U.s wouldn’t get in till all of this was over. Also they might stop drilling for gas and gas prices would go up even more than what they are now. All of the different kinds of exotic foods that they would ship to us would be gone because they would use it to feed their troops in battle.
The U.S. helping out the Libya rebels.
Some terrioest are hiding in the rebel who wants to overtake the government.
Gadhafi’ s rule has almost come to a end. He has ruled Libya for over 42 years
Over 4,000 rebels lead the push at Libya.

  46. 1. In Libya the rebels and those who are pro-Gadhafi have unsettled differences. For months the rebels have been fighting to push Gadhafi out of office to no avail at this point. Of course our American troops are willing to help as much as they can. Though America is helping and the Libyan rebels have retrieved some weapons there is no real benefit from it. The rebels don’t have enough weapons and they don’t know how to use them. With Gadhafi on the run there is no sure winner of the battle.
